A spokesperson for the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office said:
The Lord Chancellor, with the Lord Chief Justice’s agreement, has removed Fiona Western JP from the magistracy for misconduct, namely failing to keep in contact with her bench chair and failing to undertake mandatory training.
On appointment, magistrates sign a declaration and undertaking, which includes a commitment to complete mandatory training. They are also expected to keep in regular contact with their bench chair. They must demonstrate commitment and reliability in respect of their duties. Following an investigation by the South West Conduct Advisory Committee, Ms Western was found to have breached these requirements.
Ms Western provided no explanation for her lack of communication or for why she did not complete the necessary training. She also failed to engage with the disciplinary process and, therefore, provided no reasons as to why she should not be removed from office.

Sanctions for misconduct by judicial office-holders are set out in the Constitutional Reform Act 2005. They are, in order of severity: formal advice, formal warning, reprimand and removal from office.
